There are two ways to approach every situation or circumstance in life:
1) We maximize the answer to "what's-in-it-for-us"
I think this is the default mode of operation for most folks as they go through life. Businesses and corporations certainly operate this way as the goal is to "maximize shareholder value"
I believe there's a better way:
2) Maximize the possibility for Goodness in every situation, relationship, or circumstance
Yes, that may very well come at the expense of "what's in it for us".
The irony is that when we do that, not only will we maximize Goodness, but we can also have the confidence that God is going to take care of our needs. They key is that we don't have to strive for those things ourselves.
Or in other words, "Aim for Heaven and you get Earth thrown in"
