The Church of Oprah

I've been reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and it has had significant impact on me recently. This book is #2 on Amazon's top selling list and has been propelled to such heights courtesy of Oprah's endorsement. In fact, Oprah is conducting Webinars alongside Eckhart Tolle this summer to preach the messages from the book.

The trouble is that the book has created quite a storm and controversy among Christian circles. Some are even calling Oprah the Anti-Christ for endorsing this book.

The root of the problem is that the book treats Jesus as no more than an enlightened individual and a good "moral teacher", basically on the same level as Buddha. The book also asserts that each Self is divinity itself.

Despite these non-Biblical assertions, the book does contain quite a bit of insightful wisdom that has helped me tremendously in dealing with pressure and anxiety. Since I started reading the book, I find myself much more relaxed and at-ease. For that I am extremely grateful.

At the same time, I recognize that the author does not acknowledge Christian truths, although the book is peppered with Christian-like language (including Bible verses) throughout. Some Christians are offended as a result and are accusing the author of distorting the Truth.

Oprah, by direct association and active endorsement of the author and the book, is being accused of manipulating the general public with false and even "demonic doctrines". Christians that found the book useful and being accused by other Christians of betraying the Truth.

Pretty harsh stuff.
